Research approach

CeLToR will examine the changing role of leisure in contemporary cultures, focusing on sectors such as tourism, outdoor recreation, sports and events, but also the wider contexts of leisure, including the 'quality of life' within regions, cities and landscapes in general.

These environments are all subject to significant transformations through leisure production and consumption and they offer new, diverse opportunities for tourism, recreation and leisure. Leisure-based mobility and the globalization of interaction and communication networks mutually link the global world to local societies.

Central in the research approach is the understanding of leisure and tourism as agents of change. They change the world we live in, for better or for worse. This means we need to find sustainable conditions for change, as well as innovative – smart, creative – solutions.
